In today’s blog, we will be learning the phrase 힘들다.
Our previous blog post taught you the expression of happiness and today we are going to teach you the opposite.
힘들다 is a simple yet complicated expression as it can be used for various meanings, but they are all negative.
Before we proceed, let’s break down the literal meaning of 힘들다.
힘 = strength
들다 = to carry/hold
So 힘들다 basically means it needs strength in order to carry, which in turn means something is tough or hard (difficult).
Here are the different ways you can use 힘들다:
- The exam is so difficult = 시험이 너무 힘들다.
- I’m having a hard time these days = 나 요즘 좀 힘들다.
- I think that will be hard to achieve = 그게 조금 힘들것 같아요.
Another way to express difficulty can be 어렵다. However, we do not use that to express difficulty (physically or mentally), only mostly for things like studying, exams, etc.
- The exam is so difficult = 시험이 너무 어렵다.
- I think that will be hard to achieve = 그게 조금 어려울것 같아요.
What other phrases do you know that can replace 힘들다?
